The Navi Mumbai police has arrested a woman with fake currency worth Rs 3 lakh on Wednesday.

The Navi Mumbai police has arrested a woman with fake currency worth Rs 3 lakh on Wednesday. Officials said the fake notes bore close resemblance to genuine ones and it was tough to detect the difference.

“We received information that a woman has just received a bag from a friend and it contained something suspicious. She is staying alone on the Taloja-Kharghar road. Through our sources we came to know that she had got a lot of money suddenly from a friend and that within the next few days she would give it to someone else. We then laid a trap and the woman was taken into custody with fake notes,” said senior PI Rajan Jagtap.

“We are still searching for her accomplices,” added Mr Jagtap.

At least 592 fake currency notes in the denomination of Rs 1,000 and Rs 500 were seized from the accused.

“The fake currency notes are of superior quality and even bear the watermark. The woman in her statement said she was part of a gang that would circulate fake notes in the market by using them to purchase small items or give them to some other dealers. The genuine notes that they received from shopkeepers, as change, were collected and deposited into their personal bank accounts,” said Mr Jagtap.

The gang members and the woman belong to West Bengal.
