Shiv Sena MPs Vinayak Raut and Arvind Sawant on Friday met Prime Minister Narendra Modi to demand that the name of the Bombay high court be changed to Mumbai high court.

In their memorandum to the PM, the Shiv Sena parliamentarians have said that the state government has been pursuing the demand to rename the Bombay high court for several years and has also sent several proposals regarding the same to the Union government.

The Bombay high court was set up under the Indian High Court Act, 1861. Therefore, the name of the high court can be changed only by bringing an amendment in the said act by the Union government.

“In 1995, the official name of the city was changed from Bombay to Mumbai with the approval from the Central government. However, the name of the high court has remained unchanged. The demand for renaming the high court is being raised continuously since then. The proposal has been pending with the Central government for several years. If the Central government takes the decision to rename it as Mumbai high court, it will be a major achievement for the NDA government,” Sena MPs said in their memorandum.

After Bombay was renamed Mumbai in 1995, the names of all institutes in the state were changed accordingly.
