The Ganeshpuri police has arrested a man for allegedly murdering his wife after suspecting her of infidelity. After the murder he lodged a false missing person complaint with the Ganeshpuri police station.

On May 26, a fight broke out between Kamlakar Nokte (28), the accused, and his wife Sunita (25). The couple resided in Bhetkarpada in Ganeshpuri district. Nokte suspected Sunita was having an extramarital affair with a boy from Shivajinagar in Waliv and wanted to take revenge, said API Subhash Markad of Ganeshpuri police station.

The same evening, Nokte took Sunita to a temple in the Tungareshwar Wildlife Sanctuary and strangulated her to death using her saree, said the official, adding that Nokte later returned to his house as if nothing had happened.

“On May 27 he registered a fake missing complaint with us so as to mislead the police, and we started to probe,” said Mr Markad.

However, Mr Markad said Sunita’s sister suspected foul play as the victim was not found at her maternal place in Vasai too. “On June 12, we called Nokte for questioning and he confessed to the crime,” said the official. Nokte was taken to the spot where he disposed of Sunita’s body, which was kept hidden under rocks. When it was discovered, the body and was highly decomposed and has been sent for post-mortem and its report is awaited.

“We have arrested Nokte for murder and destroying evidence and he is in police custody,” said the official.
