A man has been arrested for allegedly murdering his girlfriend, who lived in Virar. The murder took place on Monday and the man was arrested from Nalla Sopara on Tuesday. He has been handed over to the Arnala Coastal police station. The motive for the murder appears to be a love affair gone wrong — his girlfriend had invited the wrath of the accused after he had seen her roaming with another man and, as a result, he stabbed her to death right behind her apartment in Virar.

Kinjal Shah (21), who stayed with her parents in Golden Ark Apartments at Bolinj in Virar, was in love with Devendra Bhosle (23), who lived in Ekvira Apartments, Moregaon, Nalla Sopara. The two had been in a relationship for the past four years. Bhosle worked as a waiter with a reputed 5-star hotel in Colaba. On Monday, he had gone to Shah's house with plans for an outing, but she was not at home, said police inspector K.D. Kolhe from the Arnala Coastal police station.

Mr Kolhe said: “While searching for Kinjal, Bhosle, to his utter shock, saw her roaming with another boy and this enraged him to no end. So, with revenge on his mind, Bhosle coaxed Kinjal to take a walk with him, planning to stab her in the process. He came prepared with a knife and, after stabbing her to death, left Kinjal's body hidden in some bushes. The murder, incidentally, took place right behind Kinjal's building.”

After Kinjal had not returned home the whole night, her parents registered a missing complaint with the police, who started a probe. “On Tuesday, we received information that the body of a girl had been found behind a building. We rushed to the spot and Kinjal's parents identified their daughter's body, which was found amongst the bushes. We sent the body for post mortem and its report is awaited,” Mr Kolhe said.

A case of murder was then registered against unknown persons, he added.

“On Tuesday morning, we received information from Tulinj police station that a man described as Bhosle was planning to flee from the city. When our team went to arrest him, he started running on seeing the policemen. But he was caught and has confessed to the crime. We have handed the case over to the Arnala police,” Mr Kolhe said.

Bhosle will be produced before a Vasai court on Wednesday facing murder charges, he added.
