Arun Date’s son dies lonely death

Two days after he breathed his last at the Sion hospital and his family refused to claim his body, a friend on Wednesday offered to perform the final rites of Sangeet Date (48), the elder son of veteran Marathi singer Arun Date.

Date was admitted to the hospital on September 23. He was suffering from peripheral oedema with gross ascites cirrhosis of liver and died on October 3. The news of his death comes days after he was found living on the streets in Pune after being disowned by his family for his bad debts and reckless lifestyle.

Joy Nagesh Bhosale, the friend who had come forward to claim Date’s body, said, “Sangeet was in a bad condition in Pune. After he was admitted to the hospital, the police contacted me as his family has disowned him.”

Senior police inspector Y.C. Gorade said, “Sangeet Date was spotted outside the Sion hospital around September 23 and admitted there. Earlier, he was admitted at the Mangeshkar hospital in Pune. However, he escaped to Mumbai. We have registered his death as an accidental one.”
