Mumbai: The Maharashtra Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) will hold sit-in agitation at all tehsildar offices across the state on February 22 to protest the ‘anti-people’ policies of the Maha Vikas Aghadi (MVA) government.

“The party workers should not sulk about Sena’s betrayal. The MVA government is cheating people after coming to power. The workers should hit the roads and participate in the protests on February 22,” former chief minister Devendra Fadnavis said in the party convention at Nerul on Sunday.

Mr Fadnavis also said that his party-led government at the Centre has been fighting a ‘perception war’ with Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) chief Sharad Pawar on the Citizenship Amendment Act, which will have to be countered by taking the fight to the streets.

“NCP chief Sharad Pawar is playing a perception war against the BJP-led Union government and deliberately creating confusion over the CAA. A disinformation campaign that the citizenship (of certain communities) will be taken away by the CAA is being spread,” he said.

The Narendra Modi government is facing protests nationwide over the Citizenship Amendment Act, which aims to give persecuted minorities from Pakistan, Afghanistan and Bangladesh citizenship but excludes Muslims.

Mr Pawar has called the Citizenship Amendment Act ‘divisive’ and ‘diversionary’ and has been vocal in his support to a plethora of national leaders who oppose the legislation until it is scrapped.

Mr Fadnavis said the strategy of parties opposed to the CAA is “if you cannot convince them, then confuse them.”

“The opposition should either prove that CAA is going to affect the poor and nomadic tribes in Maharashtra or they should apologise to Prime Minister Narendra Modi for their false claims,” he said.
