Mumbai: Although the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has suffered defeat elsewhere, it has become the single largest party in state local bodies after Monday’s elections. Now, the BJP is way ahead of other parties, with 1,100 seats out of the total 2,732 seats in 27 urban civic bodies across Maharashtra. The Shiv Sena has come a distant second with 499 seats.

After winning the Dhule Municipal Corporation polls, the ruling BJP has emerged the number one party in the state’s municipal seats. It has bagged almost 43 per cent of the seats from local bodies. Out of 2,732, BJP has members on 1,100 seats across 27 urban civic bodies in the state.

The Shiv Sena led by Uddhav Thackeray has bagged second position, with 499 seats in these civic bodies. Elections have been held on different dates since April 2015, as per the data compiled by the State Election Commission. The BJP has won 50 out of the total 74 seats in the Dhule Municipal Corporation during the election held Sunday.

With this victory, the BJP has emerged as the party in power on its own in more than a dozen civic bodies. In the Kalyan-Do-mbivali Municipal Corpo-ration and the Brihan-mumbai Municipal Corp-oration, it is sharing power with the Sena
