Mumbai: The Mumbai police has revamped the headgear of its officers by making available baseball caps that provide better protection from the sun.

The new caps for the city policemen are blue in colour, just like their predecessors.

In a month, the Mumbai police is likely to get newly designed uniforms too, though there won’t be any departure from the iconic khaki attire.

The cap initiative was carried out for the benefit of low-ranking police officers, who spend most of their time on the streets managing traffic or on bandobast duty.

Mumbai commissioner of police D.D. Padsalgikar said that they had given the new caps on trial basis to 50 constables three months ago.

“We wanted their feedback. A majority of them said it was very comfortable and easy to wear. This is an additional cap. It does not mean that we are discontinuing the older caps,” Mr Padsalgikar said.

Stating that the caps would provide help keep policemen cool, DCP PRO Mumbai police Deepak Devraj said, “We have made the caps available for all low-rank officers.”

He added, “We had tried several designs and asked few constables to don them on trial basis after which we decided to opt for a regular cap, which is comfortable and suitable in every season.” The caps have been made available in every police canteen for Rs 70.

Appreciating the comfort provided by the caps, Bharat Satham, a constable with the Byculla police station, said, “They protect us from the sun and rain. They are of high quality because of which we haven’t faced skin issues.” He added, “It would be nice if we could only buy them for cheap.”

Another constable, Shivaji Hodshil, said, “It is really commendable that our seniors are thinking about our betterment. This year, many things have been initiated for our good such as medical vans and food trucks, which is really helpful. All constables have started donning the caps on our duty. They are very comfortable and stylish too. Earlier we had to handle our caps very cautiously, now we can fit our caps easily and also run with them on.”
