New Delhi: Five members of a family were killed and four others, including children, were reported injured after the SUV car they were travelling in was hit allegedly by an East Delhi Municipal Corporation dumper in Kalyanpuri area early on Wednesday, the police said.

A senior official of the EDMC, when contacted, however, said, “The dumper wasn’t an official vehicle of the civic body.”

The accident was reported at 3 am on NH 24 when a family travelling in Innova car was heading back to their home in Meerut after receiving their two relatives from IGI airport. The relatives had returned from Iran.

A dumper truck travelling on the opposite carriageway broke through the road divider and rammed into the Innova. The impact of the accident was so powerful that the Innova overturned thrice. The car turned into a mangled heap of metal under the impact. Passersby rescued the passengers trapped inside the car and a PCR call was made.

The injured were taken to a nearby hospital. The truck overturned as well but the driver managed to escape before he could be caught. “The bodies were entangled inside the car and we used iron cutter to get the bodies out of the car. The injured were rushed to hospital,” an official said.

The police said that there is a possibility that the dumper driver fell asleep. “The driver is absconding after the incident but he will be nabbed soon,” the official said. “We have registered an FIR under relevant sections of the IPC against the dumper driver,” said joint CP Ravindra Yadav.
