New Delhi: The Delhi police arrested a 24-year-old suspected sharpshooter of the Neeraj Bawana gang, who was absconding from the past six months after firing at two persons in Lajpat Nagar. A reward of Rs 50,000 was declared on his arrest.

The arrested accused was identified as Abhishek (24). The police recovered one sophisticated improvised pistol with five live cartridges from the possession of the accused, said DCP (Southeast) Chinmoy Biswal.

Following a tip-off, a trap was laid behind the Humayun Tomb. A police team signalled the accused to stop. On seeing the police, he whipped out a country-made pistol and tried to fire. However, the staff overpowered him.

During sustained interrogation, accused Abhishek disclosed that he used to work for accused Shibu, who worked as a financer in Lajpat Nagar area. In the past few months, accused Shibu came in contact with gangsters Neeraj Bawana and Naveen Bhanja and started extorting money from people on their directions.

Accused Abhishek became their recovery goon. Earlier this year in March, along with Shibu and his other associates went to extort money from a jeweller in Lajpat Nagar. When the jeweller’s son refused to give money, he was assaulted brutally at a cafe.
