New Delhi: A gang has been arrested by the Delhi police after they robbed a businessman’s residence in Malviya Nagar while impersonating as income tax officials, said the police on Sunday. The gang was inspired by Bollywood film Special 26.

They tied up the businessman and made away with Rs 30 lakh. However, locals reacted in time and caught five suspects and handed them over to the police. Their background is being investigated.

The incident took place on Sunday afternoon, when four men managed to gain entry into the house flashing fake ID cards of the income tax department. As told to the police by residents of the house, the men then asked all the family members to surrender their mobile phones and assemble in  one room. “The complainant said that the men then locked all the doors and windows and started taking out all the jewellery and cash. They also took out `20 lakh cash. The men had told the family that the raid has been conducted following a “tax evasion” charge. “However, the victims suspected the way these men interacted with each othe,” said a senior officer.

They then sought help from their neighbours. “It was during stringent questioning that the men broke down and revealed that they had gained fake I-cards. On this, the locals thrashed these men brutally. While three of them were arrested, one managed to flee from the house,” the police said.
