Police a laughing stock after PCR stolen

New Delhi: The phone hasn’t stopped ringing since Thursday morning at the Seelampur police station after the city police had to undergo a major embarrassment when a man stole a PCR Gypsy from right under the nose of the police in Seelampur police station.

Taking a dig at the incident on Friday, a policeman on duty at Seelampur police station was caught unawares when a call was made at the station by two radio jockeys asking about the incident. The cop went into a tizzy and soon became tight-lipped when he realised that he was on air. He disconnected the phone abruptly. Though the incident raised security concerns, citizens took a dig at it.

It all began when the emergency response Gypsy, which was parked inside the station premises was allegedly stolen and driven away by a man. Soon after the cops learnt about the incident at around 4 am on Wednesday, they alerted the control room, forcing the police to launch a man hunt for the stolen vehicle.

While the harried teams headed out in search for their response vehicle, an alert citizen — identified as Rajkumar, a resident of Ghazipur — spotted the Gypsy and subsequently informed the police. A team from Madhu Vihar rushed to the Pearl Banquet Hall and arrested the man. He has been identified as Veerpal, who is a resident of Badaun in Uttar Pradesh.

When the news broke out, the police said that the arrested was a mentally challenged person. Soon after the incident, an enquiry was ordered by the top official. On Thursday, two policemen, a constable and a head constable, were suspended for negligence.

Rajkumar, who helped the police nab the thief, was rewarded with Rs 1,000 in cash and a certificate.
