The team 1st Project was formed 17 years ago, it has been a long journey so far with performing in over 2000 shows in about 30 countries.

Since the time they started at a little music school in Johannesburg, they have played over 2000 shows and toured over 25 countries, making them South Africa’s biggest drumming act. The 1st Project boys are now all set to enthral Mumbaikars with their high-energy act. Excerpts from a quick chat:

When did you guys form a team and start performing?
The team 1st Project was formed 17 years ago, it has been a long journey so far with performing in over 2000 shows in about 30 countries. We’ve got Johannes, who’s joined us a year ago and has been just the right addition in the band.

Please give us an understanding of what ‘aggressive percussion’ really is?
Beating the drum as loud, as hard, with as much aggression and energy as you can, really defines aggressive percussion

What goes on during your practice sessions? What is your routine like?
When we get together for rehearsals we typically brainstorm some new ideas and start executing them on our instruments. Everyone then comes with opinions / creative inputs with the help of which, we end up creating a new song. However, every rehearsal has a different routine as we take up every show as our 1st Project!

When you started off, did you ever imagine becoming such a sensational group throughout the world?
We never thought of getting this big on timely basis though, we always had this vision and mission. But success comes only with passion and determination towards pursuing it and, that’s what we inherit as a band as well.

Since you are coming to Mumbai for the very first time. Tell us about some of your plans?
Coming to India for the very first time for public performance and being in Mumbai feels great. There are many things one can experience here. But, in the limited time we have we would like to: Play with an authentic Indian Percussionist, ride an Elephant, ride rickshaws, play tabla

What do you expect out of the crowd from Mumbai?
If you see the production that AGP World has put on, it’s fantastic sound, lightings, and visuals. We are sure the crowd here in Mumbai is going to be extremely responsive. We will just go out there and give it our all.
