Technology has taken the world by storm in the digital age as online services have taken over everything from booking air tickets to shopping for groceries and clothes. But at the same time, people are also nostalgic about devices popular in the past.

While pop culture icons and songs from the 90s have been popular with social media users, it seems the music industry got a taste of nostalgia since vinyl records have left digital downloads behind when it comes raking in the moolah.

The amount spent by music enthusiasts on digital downloads last year stood at $2.1 million as the purchase of records from markets brought in a total of $2.4 million. The top sellers for records were Metallica, Pink Floyd, The Beatles, Amy Winehouse and the soundtrack for the hit Netflix series Stranger Things.

Many suggest that the rise in popularity of the old-school medium of music is due to the ‘truer’ sound and better sensory experience which vinyl records provide and which is missing in digital downloads. Added to this is the growing desire to own vintage.
