Helps arrested for Kolkata dacoity

The Bidhannagar city police cracked the daring dacoity in Salt Lake last week and arrested six accused, including the mastermind from Jharkhali, in South 24 Parganas and Baguiati in North 24 Parganas on Tuesday night. Some of the stolen valuables were recovered. Most of the accused work are domestic help.

The main culprit, Sitaram Das (30) alias Sachin, is the domestic help of the Chakraborty family’s next-door neighbour in CE Block. He hails from Banka in Bihar. Five other arrested accused are Pappu Yadav alias Pardesi (22), Manoj Kumar Das alias Congressi (18), Rajesh Kumar Yadav (28), Raja Halder (34) and Tapan Purkait (28).

While Pappu, Manoj and Rajesh are also from Banka, Raja is from Jharkhali and Tapan from Baguiati.

With the help of Rajesh, Sitaram had plotted the dacoity after keeping a tab on the movements of the Chakraborty family.

He even visited the Chakraborty family’s house, Swarna Villa, many times to do a recce. Sitaram later roped in two more domestic help, Pappu and Manoj, who work at two separate houses in another block of Salt Lake. The quartet then hired three auto rickshaw drivers, including Raja and Tapan. The gang tried to loot the house on July 3 but failed.

On July 8 evening, they discussed their plan in detail at a meeting at the ground floor of the house of the Chakraborty family’s neighbour and then scaled the boundary wall from the rear side of their house for entry.

While Sitaram and Rajesh were remanded to judicial custody for two weeks, four others were sent to police custody for two weeks by the Bidhannagar court on Wednesday.
