Acute shortage of investigating officers (IOs) in different ranks has forced the CBI to write to state governments and directors-general of Central armed police forces seeking officers on deputation basis.

Sources said, “Directors-generals of the Central armed police forces and chief secretaries of state governments have been requested by the CBI to spare officers of requisite seniority to join the CBI on a deputation basis. All recruitment rules have already been revised as per the requirement of the CBI in 2013.”

“The CBI has also been exempted from consultation with the UPSC for recruitment to the post of DySP for a period of three years. Approval has been conveyed to the CBI to fill up vacancies for DySP through limited departmental competitive examinations,” sources said. Directly recruited sub-inspectors, who are either B.Tech, BE, LLB, MBA or BCA, are eligible under new recruitment rules to become DySP through LDCE after putting in only five years of service, they said.

The proposal of the CBI regarding relaxation in eligibility criteria for the promotion of 149 sub-inspectors to inspector has already been approved, sources said. “The UPSC has already recommended the appointment of 80 public prosecutors in CBI, which has been conveyed to CBI for further necessary action. Approval has also been conveyed for extension in the deputation tenure of 31 public prosecutors on a contract basis,” they said.

Besides, power has been delegated to Director, CBI for extending of deputation in respect of Inspectors in CBI for the 9th and 10th year and also for extensions to 6th, 7th and 8th year which at present is approved by a committee consisting of three members, sources said. Directly recruited Sub Inspectors, who have qualifications of B.Tech, B.E., LLB, MBA and BCA, are eligible under new Recruitment Rules to become DySP through LDCE after putting in only five years of service, they said.
