Bet lost, man lets friend ‘rape’ wife

Amid the raging debate over “triple talaq”, a Muslim man from Jaipur reportedly allowed his friend to sexually assault his wife on the pretext of “nikah halala” after he lost a bet.

“Nikah halala” is a process by which a divorced Muslim couple may be reunited. It requires the woman to go through the entire process all over again — remarry, consummate the second marriage, get divorced, and then return to him.

However, in this case, the woman alleged that her husband got her raped by his friend. She said her 50-year-old husband is her cousin. He divorced her eight months ago after 25 years of marriage, but continued to have a relationship with her.

The woman said he tried to convince her to sleep with his friend after losing a bet, but when she refused, he gave her “triple talaq”. The couple has two grown-up sons.

In August, the woman’s husband took her to his friend’s house. She was not feeling well, and he allegedly gave her some medicine after which she became unconscious. When she woke up and saw her husband’s friend, she started shouting, but her husband told her it was a ritual of “nikah halala”. She said her husband took a video of the assault by his friend.

He also reportedly had a document saying the woman and his friend were married. Despite the threats and the video, the woman filed a complaint with police. A case of rape has been registered against the duo, who are absconding.
