Lucknow: Tension prevailed in Meerut district after caste clashes between dalits and Jats were reported from Kanchanpur Ghopla village under Partapur police station area.

The conflict took place when two marriage processions — one of Jats and the other of dalits — came face to face with each other, late on Sunday night.

The people of two sides began arguing over the issue of dancing in the marriage procession and then came to blows with each other.

As the situation worsened, they pelted stones at each other and even opened fire, leaving several injured.

While two of the six injured persons were admitted to district hospital in critical condition, around a dozen from both sides were taken into police custody.

People in the marriage processions also vandalized several houses and damaged vehicles in the area.
