Man held for flouting NGT rules

The police has arrested a man for allegedly violating the National Green Tribunal (NGT) order by plying trucks more than 10 years old after getting the vehicles re-registered illegally from Nagaland.

Sanjay Kumar, the owner of Delhi Karnataka Roadlines, was held for plying trucks older than the prescribed limit after getting them re-registered, joint commissioner of police (crime branch) Ravindra Yadav said on Friday. NGT has ordered that no diesel-run vehicles that are more than 10-years-old should ply in Delhi and NCR.

A crime branch team raided the office of the accused at Sanjay Gandhi Transport Nagar and seized one truck bearing a Nagaland registration number.

Soon, another such truck was recovered. The two models of trucks were upgraded by re-registering them in Nagaland through a tout who used to charge `70,000 per truck, said the officer.

The two trucks, manufactured in 2004 and 2005 were upgraded to be shown as manufactured in 2008 and 2009. Touts in Nagaland would rub the existing chassis number of a truck and punch a new one. Thereafter, it would be re-registered in the state with a new chassis number. The touts also provided all relevant papers like registration certificate.

The crime branch has claimed to have identified many other transporters involved in re-registration of older trucks.

The investigation found that many such vehicles may be plying fraudulently in Delhi and NCR, Mr Yadav said.
