A boy in his late teens hit several people, including men on a motorcycle, rickshaw-pullers and a few shop-owners of Mandawali while he was driving his Alto car over the prescribed speed limit in East Delhi’s Mandawali area on Thursday afternoon. After hitting people, the teenaged driver along with his 14-year-old brother sped off. The shop-owners chased them for 1.5 km on their scooter till the car stopped near SBI Bank in Preet Vihar, according to witnesses.

The incident took place at around 2.30 pm in the Preet Vihar area. According to a senior police officer privy to the investigation, “When local shop owners tried to stop the driver, he sped away. Some shop-owners chased him on a scooter for 1.5 km till the car was stopped near SBI Bank in Preet Vihar.”

Bunty Gupta, one of the shop-owners who was present throughout the incident, said, “The teenaged driver came out after we (the shop-owners) somehow managed to stop the Alto car and took away his car keys. At that very instant, he dialled a number on his mobile phone. Upon which, a man wearing a black security attire came and started pointing a pistol at us, threatening to kill us if we did not let the teenaged driver leave with the car. A scuffle erupted as we started telling that man (the one wearing black security uniform) that we will take the teenager to the police station. A few minutes later, he started firing,” Mr Gupta added, “One of the bullets hit Rahul, an 18-year-old who works at a paan shop and another bullet slightly grazed Pawan (27), a shop-owner.”

“One of us informed the police after which Rahul was rushed to Metro Hospital. He was later transferred to L.B.S. Hospital where he is undergoing treatment,” added Mr Gupta.
