An 18-year-old youth was killed while his friend suffered severe injuries when their motorbike was hit by a speeding truck in South Delhi’s Katwaria Sarai area.

A senior police official said that the incident took place at around 7.30 pm on Saturday evening.

The official said that the deceased student was identified as Akash Kataria. He was a Class 12 student at a nearby government school.

”Kataria was travelling with his friend who was riding the bike. When they were near the Katwaria Sarai area, a rashly driven truck hit their bike from behind. The impact of the collision was so strong that both were thrown off the bike. Kataria was crushed to death beneath the truck’s tyres while his friend was injured in the incident,” the police said.

According to police, the duo were moving down Shaheed Jeet Singh Marg when the truck, approaching from the Adhchini area, hit their motorbike.

The official said Kataria’s friend was admitted to a nearby government hospital where his condition is stated to be critical.

The truck driver has been booked for rash driving and causing death by negligence.

Kataria’s body has been handed over to his relatives after a post-mortem, the police said.

It is still being ascertained whether the duo was wearing helmets, the police added.
