England restricted South Africa to 262/7 in the second one-day international on Saturday after Reece Topley’s career-best 4/50 at St George’s Park.

Left-arm seamer Topley and allrounder Ben Stokes (2/54) curtailed South Africa’s progress after the Proteas were set for a late surge at 205/3 in the 41st over.

But South Africa captain A.B. de Villiers fell for 73 to Stokes and J.P. Duminy for 47 to Topley after a controversial decision by the umpire three balls later to steal the home team’s momentum.

Faf du Plessis made 46 at no. 3, and Farhaan Behardien hit 23 not out from 26 balls at the end, but England never let South Africa get away. England conceded just 64 runs in the last 10 overs, and also took four wickets.

England lead the five-match series 1-0 and can take a big step toward following up their victory in the Test series with a win in the limited-overs series by clinching the Port Elizabeth match.

South Africa’s total was competitive on a slow pitch that can sometimes be difficult to bat on, but it was by no means imposing for the England batting lineup.

Scores South Africa 262/7 in 50 overs (A.B. de Villiers 74, J.P. Duminy 47, Faf du Plessis 46, R. Topley 4/50, B. Stokes 2/54) vs England.
