An Indian woman who had no access to a toilet in her home has been granted permission to divorce her husband by a family court.

The court in Rajasthan ruled on the case in August 18, Channel News Asia reported.

Throughout their five years of marriage, the woman told the court, her husband did not provide a toilet which was grounds for cruelty.

Justice Rajendra Kumar Sharma said women living in villages experience excruciating pain because they wait till it gets dark to relieve themselves outdoors, the report revealed.

Rajesh Sharma told AFP the judge stated open defecation is "disgraceful and deemed it torture to deny women a safe environment for relief".
