Additional director general (ADG) Dattatray Padsalgikar has been appointed the new Mumbai police commissioner on Saturday and will take charge from outgoing commissioner, director general (DG) Ahmad Javed, on Sunday.

The post of Police Commissioner has been downgraded to accommodate Mr Padsalgikar, an IPS officer. It had been upgraded to accommodate DG Javed in place of ADG Rakesh Maria who was promoted as DG home guards. Mumbai police gave the outgoing commissioner a fitting farewell at Naigaon Police Ground in central Mumbai on Saturday morning.

The ceremony was attended by all senior police officers ranging from Senior Inspector to Joint Commissioner. In his last words as Mumbai CP, Mr Javed said, “It has been an honour to be part of the police force. The support and love that I have received from the force has been the key to my success.”

Later in the day, Mr Padsalgikar was appointed as the new Commissioner of Police and felicitated by additional chief secretary, Home, K.P. Bakshi. Mr Padsalgikar was born on August 26, 1958 and is a 1982 batch officer. He has spent over a decade working in the Intelligence Bureau (IB). He has worked as Assistant Superintendent of police in Nagpur and Karad (Satara).

In Mumbai, he has worked as deputy commissioner of Police (DCP) Detection in the crime branch, DCP in the Economic Offences Wing (EOW), DCP in south Mumbai and DCP of the Bandra-Jogeshwari stretch apart from serving as superintendent of police (SP) in Osmanabad and Satara. In his two stints in the IB, he has worked in Nagaland, New Delhi, Washington-USA and also as joint and additional director in Mumbai.

Mr Padsalgikar is the choice of chief minister Devendra Fadnavis, who was keen to have him as Mumbai CP. It is learnt that he was brought back from his central posting on a request made by Mr Fadnavis. It is also learnt that Mr Padsalgikar is also a favourite of Ajit Doval, the present National Security Adviser to Prime Minister Narendra Modi.
