Thirty-five-year-old Naziya Mohammed Akbar Sayyed was saved in the nick of time by commuters while trying to commit suicide at Vikhroli station around 1.33 pm on Monday.

A video of the incident shows the woman walking towards an oncoming Ambernath train in broad daylight on the tracks near platform no. 1. The video, which was captured by a CCTV camera on platform no. 2, shows commuters on the platform motioning to the motorman to slow down the train. The video then shows Ms Sayyed, who was wearing a green saree, striding towards the train at full speed. It’s here when a young boy is seen pulling Ms Sayyed to the side. Later, another boy pushed the resisting woman off the track.

The CCTV at platform no.1 captured Ms Sayyed getting down from the platform and walking towards the train. She went unnoticed by most commuters standing on the platform. It was in fact the commuters on platform no. 2 who noticed Ms Sayyed and halted the train, while the others rescued her.

The Government Railway Police (GRP) did not speak about the incident on Tuesday. Both Central and Western Railway have asked for funds to create end-to-end boundary walls throughout the entire section, so as to make the tracks less accessible to commuters.

The two youths who saved Sayyed have not been identified yet.
