In a bid to rein in the drug menace, the anti-narcotics cell (ANC) on Thursday started its new helpline where people can call if they find anyone peddling or consuming banned drugs.

According to senior police officers, the helpline — 9819111222 — was launched by Mumbai police commissioner D.D. Padsalgikar on Wednesday at the inauguration of a new training hall at Cuffe Parade headquarters of ANC. Citizens can call on this number or send a message or video if they come across anything suspicious. Their names will not be disclosed at any point during the investigation. Calls will be replied to with strict action taken by ANC. The initiative is meant to stop drug peddlers from luring students into the habit.

Deputy commissioner of police, Jayant Naiknaware of ANC, said, “On this helpline, anyone can call at any time or send a text related to drug activities that they have come across in their own area or elsewhere. Citizens can also send pictures, videos or recordings via WhatsApp that will help us reach the spot and get details about people who are doing this.”

A police officer said, “If the information is regarding drug consumption at a local level, it will be forwarded to the concerned police station. If it is related to peddling, it will be communicated to the ANC unit concerned for further action.”
