A survey conducted by cardiologists at Sion hospital has found that 40 per cent of patients complaining of heart disorders in the city are below the age of 40.

A survey conducted by cardiologists at Sion hospital has found that 40 per cent of patients complaining of heart disorders in the city are below the age of 40. Out of them, 34 per cent are smokers, found the survey.

The survey was carried out over a period of six months preceding World Heart Day, which was observed on Wednesday. It was done on 400 young city-based patients at Sion hospital.

The survey also found that a similar percentage of patients below the age of 40 was also afflicted with Acute Coronary Syndrome, a serious form of coronary heart ailment where three arteries have blockages, said a hospital source. Such patients in a majority of cases had undergone coronary angiography or coronary angiogram within 72 hours of admission.

Risk factors, clinical features and angiographic profiles were also studied, and they revealed that smoking was the most common risk factor seen in 34 per cent of patients. Forty three per cent of the patients had single-vessel disease and only 5.5 per cent of them had triple-vessel disease.

Evidence of heart failure was seen in 14.5 per cent of the patients surveyed. Family history of premature coronary artery disease was seen in 6 per cent of patients.

Sion hospital’s head of department (cardiology) Dr Ajay Mahajan said, “We get many patients suffering from heart aliments out which specifically we took data of younger patients and observed the abnormalities in them.”

Dr Mahajan said, “A few steps such as eating healthily, cutting down on alcohol and quitting smoking can improve your heart health and your overall well-being and reduce premature deaths from cardiovascular disease by 80 per cent.”

Dr PM Bhujang, president, Association of Hospitals, said, “The aim is to improve health by encouraging people to indulge in healthy eating habits and lead a healthy lifestyle.”
