Shia cleric’s death triggers ruckus
The timely intervention of the police averted any major untoward incident.
Mumbai: Chaos overtook the Wockhardt Hospital in Mira Road, following the death of a patient, Maulana Ehsan Haider (52), a Shia cleric and scholar, late on Tuesday night. The cleric had complained of chest pain and collapsed, following which he was rushed to the Wockhardt Hospital at around 9:30 pm on Tuesday.
He could not survive and died at around 11 pm, after which his agitated followers went on a rampage at the hospital premises, they broke glass panes and damaged vehicles that were parked outside. The timely intervention of the police averted any major untoward incident.
On-duty doctors claimed to have started Cardio-Pulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) on the patient. However, alleging medical negligence, agitated devotees and followers of the highly revered religious personality went amok.
Rebutting the allegations that non-medical staff had attended the cleric in the absence of doctors, Emergency Physician Dr Sharad Yadav, said, “Immediately after the patient was brought, I along with my team personally commenced CPR measures. The CCTV cameras have recorded the entire sequence of events.”
“Some mischief mongers had apparently spread the rumour which sparked the trouble. Nor the kin, neither the hospital have registered any complaint with us.” said a police officer.
