Mumbai: The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) has approached consulates of various countries, asking them to participate in the tender process for appointing project management consultants for the south-end of Mumbai coastal road project.

The BMC has invited global tenders for appointing project management consultants for supervision of three stages of the south-end that will run from Princess Street flyover to Worli end of the Bandra-Worli Sea Link (BWSL). Civic officials said that nationally- and internationally- renowned companies with necessary competence and experience have been asked to bid for the project.

Bids have been invited separately for three packages, including Priyadarshini Park to Baroda Palace, Baroda Palace to Worli end of BWSL, and Princess Street flyover to Priyadarshini Park. A senior civic official said, "The coastal road is an ambitious project and hence, we want expertise of international standards for it. We have written to the consulates of several European, American and Asian countries, requesting them to ask their top companies to participate in the bidding process.”

The role of project management consultants will be to monitor contractors’ works. The last date to bid for tenders is August 8. The consultants will be appointed by end of August and the project is likely to start from October, the official said.

The union ministry of environment and forests (MoEF) has already given the green signal for the coastal road by issuing a notification that allows the state to reclaim land for construction of the project.

Ambitious project

The Rs 4,500 crore south-end of the coastal road project involves construction of an over 5.6 km tunnel that will run under the sea from Princess Street (Marine Drive) to Priyadarshini Park. It will then proceed towards Baroda Palace, Mahalaxmi, for which 1.3km of land will be reclaimed from the sea. Another 1.7 km of road will be constructed from Baroda Palace that will reach Worli end of BWSL.
