Mumbai: Weather experts have stated that this year, winter over India is expected to be warmer due to the El Nino phenomenon. According to the Indian Meteorological Department (IMD), after the deficient rainfall across the country in September, India may see more drought conditions and a warmer winter due to the effect of El Nino here.

El Nino is a weather phenomenon, which occurs when the surface temperatures of the water in the central and eastern Pacific Ocean become substantially warmer than average. This causes a shift in atmospheric circulation.

According to IMD experts, the natural cycle will gradually move towards the Arabian Sea and its effect will be seen in India, which may mean increased temperatures than normal in winter in India.

“The process of formation of the El Nino effect has already begun in the last few months, which may have led to low rainfall in the months of August and September. The process may have been the reason for increased temperatures in September,” said a senior IMD official.

The El Nino effect will fully descend in India by November and December, where the impact will be maximum in the country. While the IMD has not predicted by how many degrees temperatures will rise in India, a winter forecast with the effect of El Nino will be released in the coming month.
