New Delhi: The special cell of the Delhi police has arrested the son of a judge for impersonating as a sitting judge of the Supreme Court and seeking a favour from UP chief minister Yogi Adityanath’s office.

A senior police official said that the accused, identified as Tausif-ul-Haque, a 2nd year law student, had telephoned R.N. Pandey, principal secretary (law) in Mr Yogi’s government, pretending to be Kurian Joseph, a sitting Supreme Court judge, to request that a college lecturer in Lucknow be appointed at a senior position in Allahabad high court.

As the matter was pertaining to Allahabad high court, Mr Yogi’s officials discussed the matter with R.N. Nijhawan, the registrar of Supreme Court. “That’s when it was revealed that Mr Joseph never made any call to any official in Yogi’s government. Mr Joseph then wrote to Delhi police commissioner Amulya Patanik, requesting him to lodge a complaint,” the police said.

After registering the FIR, the police was able to trace and arrest Tausif from Lucknow.

The police official said that Tausif had changed his name on mobile application True Caller. “When Mr Pandey received the call from Tausif, it was showing that Kurian Joseph Supreme Court of India was calling him,” the official said.

“The accused has a history of criminal activities. He has impersonated as several high-ranking government officials. The SIM card that he was using was found to be registered in another’s name,” the police added. Tausif is pursuing LLB from City Law Academy in Lucknow.

The official further said that Ravi Srivastava, the college lecturer also at City Law Academy, had reportedly asked Tausif to call Yogi’s government officials and request them to appoint him in Allahabad high court. The police said that they were interrogating the accused to find out whether more people were involved in the case.
