BJP president Amit Shah on Saturday said only the saffron party can defeat the Samajwadi Party in Uttar Pradesh, not the Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP).

Addressing a rally in Rohaniya, Varanasi, to mark the birth anniversary of BJP ally Apna Dal founder Dr Sonelal Patel, Mr Shah said it is high time the people uproot the Samajwadi government and vote in a BJP government.

“It is the Samajwadi government which is actually stalling development. The benefits of the Modi government are not reaching the poor in Uttar Pradesh because the state government is a barrier. The transformer of this government in Lucknow has been burnt and time has come for a replacement”, he said.

Mr Shah also lashed out at the SP government for not taking steps to end the backwardness of Purvanchal region.

“What has Mulayam Singh done for Purvanchal What has Rahul Gandhi’s Baba, dadi, and papa sarkar done for the poor We have given free gas connections, opened bank accounts for the poor but neither the Congress nor the SP have done anything for the poor”, he said.

Mr Shah also lashed out at Rahul Gandhi, questioning the need for asking a two-year-old about the work done by the Modi government, however, he never gave the ten-year account of the UPA government.

“Rahul baba is wearing Italian glasses and cannot see Indian reality. When his party was in power, our soldiers were being beheaded but now our jawans respond with ‘golas’ if the neighbours send us “golis”, he said.

Recalling the contribution of late Dr Sonelal Patel, the BJP president said that Dr Patel’s contribution towards the upliftment of the poor and downtrodden cannot be ignored and said that the BJP offered glowing tributes to the late leader.

Apna Dal MP Anupriya Patel and senior BJP leaders Om Mathur and Keshav Maurya also addressed the rally.
