BJP president Amit Shah on Monday said that Prime Minister Narendra Modi can now be considered a “UP wala”.

“When I went to Gujarat, the people there told me that Prime minister Narendra Modi belonged to that state but it is not the case anymore. He is an MP form Varanasi, and a UP wala”, Mr Shah said while addressing a meeting of party workers in Barabanki.

Mr Shah attacked the Samajwadi Party president Mulayam Singh Yadav and Bahujan Samaj Party chief Mayawati and said that both the leaders were supporting “corruption-hit” Congress at the Centre.

He attacked the BSP and accused the party of using dalits for its own gains. “The BSP has not done anything for dalits,” he alleged.

Mr Shah further said that, “The Samajwadi Party comprises of goons and mafias and there are several Mukhtars and Ateeqs in the party. Law and order in Uttar Pradesh has turned into ‘lo and then order’ and the situation can be changed only when the BJP comes to power here,” he said.

“There are now three and a half chief ministers in UP — two uncles form one chief minister, then there is Akhilesh, his father and Azam Khan who is half chief minister,” he said.

Referring to the Mathura incident, the BJP president said that the state government cannot protect its police officials and the people should not expect much for themselves from the government.

He said that the Centre had given enough funds to the state government and it was up to the people to seek an account of that money.

“The Centre has given so many schemes for the welfare of the people but the benefits are not percolating down to the beneficiaries in UP. This will be possible only when the BJP comes to power here. The nation’s progress can be complete only when UP progresses,” he stated.

Mr Shah said that the biggest achievement of the Modi government was that in the past two years, there was not a single blot of corruption or scam on the Centre.

“India is now a global leader and it is the efforts of our Prime Minister which are responsible for this. We have to strengthen his hands further so that India can raise its head with pride”, he added.
