In a shocking incident, a 28-year-old woman was murdered in front of her two children allegedly by her inebriated elder brother at his home in northwest Delhi’s Outram Lines slums near Mukherjee Nagar in the early hours of Sunday.
The accused, Premu, entered his sister’s room in an inebriated condition around 1 am and thrust open the door with his leg. He killed his sister, Madhuri, by inserting a rolling pin (belan) in her mouth and pressing her neck with his foot. The police suspects that the man had gone to his sister’s room with an intention of sexually assaulting her but when she resisted, he lost his temper and killed her in a fit of rage. Her seven-year-old elder son begged his uncle to spare his mother as his younger brother, who is just 3 years old, was also present in the room during the murder.
The deceased was staying with her brother after she separated from her husband two years ago. Even the accused had a strained relationship with his wife, who in turn was also staying with her brother, said a senior police official. The accused was known for his temper tantrums and according to the victim’s son, had brutally beaten up his sister on earlier occasions also.
After murdering his sister, the accused fled to his brother-in-law’s home in Kingsway Camp and again consumed alcohol. He was, however, arrested later in the morning, said the police.
On Saturday evening, Premu left home telling his sister that he would return late. Madhuri went to sleep with her children in a room on the first floor. Premu consumed alcohol with his brother-in-law, Ram Babu, at his home and returned around midnight.
“When Madhuri found him drunk, she scolded him. This enraged Premu and he murdered her in a fit of rage before fleeing the crime scene,” said a police official.
Her children did not know that she was dead, said the official.
In the morning around 7 am, her elder son told neighbours that his mother was lying unconscious after Premu assaulted her. The neighbours went to the room and found her dead. They called the police control room.
“A murder case was registered and Premu has been arrested. Both the children are eyewitnesses to the crime,” the officer added.
