In a bid to score political brownie points, the Delhi BJP has offered a job to Shelly Narang, dentist wife of Pankaj Nagar, who was lynched to death by a mob outside his home last week in Vikaspuri, in a hospital administered by the South Delhi Municipal Corporation (SDMC). This kind of an offer has been made for the first time in the history of civic bodies in the national capital.
A senior functionary in the BJP-ruled civic body told this newspaper that such a job offer had been made for the first time to someone on humanitarian grounds. “Till now, only kin of municipal employees who die in service used to get jobs. However, seeing the tragic death of a young doctor, the corporation has decided to offer job to his wife at any of its hospitals as a dentist,” he added.
Sources in the SDMC said Dr Shelly Narang will be appointed at one SDMC health centre nearest to her residence. “Her place of work will be close to her residence so that she can easily take care of her child without wasting too much time in travel,” he added. Delhi BJP chief Satish Upadhyay had earlier said that apart from job offer to Dr Narang’s wife, the SDMC will provide his family all help in putting up security gates and setting up a CCTV network to ensure safety for the residents in the locality.
“Dr Narang’s family and the local RWA office-bearers put across to three demands related to security concerns of the colony. We had a word with the police commissioner and the SDMC. The police commissioner has assured that a police picket point shall be ordered for the colony immediately. The SDMC has assured all help in putting up security gates and setting up a CCTV network to ensure safety for the residents. The SDMC has been kind enough to offer a job to the wife of the killed doctor on humanitarian grounds,” added Mr Upadhyay.
Mayor SDMC Subhash Arya and Leader of House in SDMC Asish Sood said that Dr Narang’s family had been long-time residents of the area. “With regard to their social contribution, we have offered a job to Dr Shelly Narang on humanitarian grounds,” he added.
Meanwhile, a police source privy to the investigation said two of the three persons identified as suspects in the dentist’s murder are hiding in West Delhi’s Uttam Nagar and police teams have been sent to nab them. These two persons were identified with the help of CCTV footage obtained through one of the premises near the victim’s house.
