After a day-long drama at the Jawaharlal Nehru University campus, the police detained about 90 members of the right-wing Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad on Friday for protesting against the students of the university who raised anti-India slogans.

“As many as 90 protesters were detained and taken to the Parliament Street police station,” said New Delhi DCP Jatin Narwal.

The ABVP members were protesting near India Gate and demanding action against the university and the students.

Terming the event by a group of JNU students as an “anti-national” activity, the ABVP has been demanding the expulsion of the organisers of the event from the varsity.

Sakshi Bhardwaj, a JNU student and a member of the ABVP, said: “I was th-ere during the event at ca-mpus. I was even manhan-dled by the leftist groups.”

This is total abuse of our Constitution and shameful for our motherland. We want their suspension and if they think we are intolerant, then yes, we are.”

“How can such activities be tolerated at an educatio-nal institution Democracy does not mean we can ab-use the Constitution which guarantees us democracy,” ABVP Delhi secretary Saket Bahuguna said.

Marking the death anniversary of Afzal Guru, a group of students on Tuesday held an event on the campus and shouted slogans against the Central government for hanging him.

Meanwhile, Bollywood actor Anupam Kher, when asked on Twitter about the incident, said, “My views are not different from millions of Indians. It is shocking. Bharat ki Barbadi Chahte hai #Shameful.(sic)”

“It is shocking. And frightening to think that few people have so much venom against their own country (sic),” the actor said.

When asked what should be done, he wrote, “Clean up.”
