Non-dairy milk alternatives are the preferred alternative to those looking to turn vegan. They are also used by those trying to cut down fat from their diet. While there are several varieties like almond and soy milk available, the consumer is spoilt for choice.

Market surveys have shown that oat milk is currently the most popular non-dairy milk alternative. It has a naturally sweet and nutty taste which adds to its flavour profile. It has a very creamy texture and a long list of health benefits that make it an ideal healthy alternative. Another plus point of oat milk is that it is more sustainable to make than other non-dairy alternatives. Oat milk frothing as well as regular cow’s milk and thus, can be used for fancy beverages like a cappuccino as well.

How does oat milk compare to regular milk?

Oat milk’s fat profile is much healthier than that of regular milk. It has zero saturated fat and more unsaturated (healthy) fats than that of regular milk. Oat milk also does not have any cholesterol, whereas cow’s milk has 24 milligrams per cup.

The amount of vitamins and minerals are the same in both the kinds of milks- one cup can provide about 20 per cent of your daily value of Vitamins A and D. Oat milk has more fibre, carbs and less protein than regular milk.

The nutrients in oat milk are not always equal as it depends upon the process used to make it. The amount of healthy fats and protein in it may vary. If you find that it is lacking in certain essentials, then make sure to supplement your diet with foods that can provide you with the required nutrients. A bowl of cereal, walnuts or eggs can be great sources of protein.

What to look for when buying oat milk?

Each pack of oat milk has different nutritional value. Several oat milk brands pack a lot of added sugar along with it. WHO recommends that adults should keep their added sugar intake to a maximum of six teaspoons a day.

Another thing to watch out for on nutritional labels is the “other” ingredients. Usually this milk doesn’t need stabilisers or gums are they are present naturally in the milk. But these are not health issues. Also make sure that your milk does not contain and gluten.
