The right wing’s decision to disrupt the first ever government celebration of 18th century ruler Tipu Sultan’s birthday on November 10, describing him as “the most intolerant king”, is clearly a tactic to grab headlines. Tipu was not just a Muslim ruler but an icon of Indian resistance against British conquest. Let us not be over-zealous in asserting a break from history.
