New Delhi: While the city is on high alert in the wake of Republic Day and is being covered under a heavy security blanket, three bike-borne men allegedly assaulted and later open fired at a 26-year-old man on January 17 night in R.K. Ashram Marg under Mandir Marg police station limits.

The police has identified the injured man as Deepak alias Chotu, who stays in a makeshift house inside Kalavati Hospital. Deepak, who had sustained a bullet injury in his right leg, was rushed to Ram Manohar Lohia Hospital by the police.

Police said that the incident took place on last Tuesday night when Deepak, who works in Kalavati Hospital canteen owned by Mohan Kakkad, was on his way to get his digital cable TV recharged. As he reached R.K. Ashram near Mandir Marg, three bike-borne men intercepted him. In his complaint to the police, the victim stated that Shiv Dayal, a resident of Paharganj, along with his younger brother and one other associate, allegedly intercepted him and began questioning about the whereabouts of Mohan Kakkad, the canteen owner. When Deepak refused to share any detail about Mohan, Shiv grabbed him by his collar while his younger brother held him from behind and started assaulting him.

The complainant further stated that when he tried to raise an alarm, the three men, who got scared, supposedly fired at him and fled from the spot. The bullet hit Deepak on his right leg, following which he collapsed on the road and cried for help. Deepak somehow managed to stop an auto-rickshaw, following which he reached the nearest PCR Van and narrated the entire incident. The beat cops then shifted him to Ram Manohar Lohia Hospital, where based on his statement, Mandir Marg police registered a case of assault and attempt to murder, added the police. Deepak also alleged that no passer-by helped him. The police is yet to ascertain the reason behind the attack.
