New Delhi: An accused in a dowry case against whom a Jalandhar court had issued a look out circular was detained at the Indira Gandhi International Airport, but he managed to give a slip to the Delhi police on late Tuesday night. The Delhi police detained Chandeep Singh Sandhu and took him into custody until he was to be handed over to the Punjab police for further legal action.

In this connection, “We have suspended a head constable for the negligence of duty and a case has been registered against the accused,” said Sanjay Bhatia, deputy commissioner of police (IGI airport). The accused was kept in confinement in the interrogation room of the IGI police station. Soon after being informed by the Delhi police that it had detained Mr Sandhu at the airport, a Jalandhar police team left for the Capital to take the custody of the accused on late Tuesday night.

A senior police officer directed a head constable to keep the accused in safe custody till the arrival of the Punjab police. When the senior police officer went to the interrogation room and did not find the Mr Sandhu, he enquired from the head constable about his whereabouts and was told that Mr Sandhu had to attend nature's call and was taken to the toilet located at the ground floor of the police station from where he made his escape.

Continuing, the head constable said Mr Sandhu went inside the toilet and when he did not emerge after five minutes, the police personnel, sensing that something was amiss, went inside the toilet and found the window panel of the toilet open. The head constable immediately informed his seniors about the incident and with the help of other staff he tried to locate the suspect, but the accused had made his escape by then.
