A project engineer was on Tuesday beaten up allegedly by a group of Trinmamul Congress workers at the Sagardighi Power Development Project Limited. The victim, S. Sibrajan, was admitted at the Murshidabad Medical College Hospital. Mr Sibrajan is a project engineer in charge of a subsidiary company’s power project. He earned the wrath of the project’s INTTUC leader Masiur Rahman and his associates when he refused to pay extortion money demanded by them.
Infuriated INTTUC workers first gheraoed the project engineer and his colleagues and then threatened them with dire consequences if they refused to pay. They then picked up a fight with Mr Sibrajan for engaging outsiders to work at the project. Mr Sibrajan was then beaten up. He, however, said that some miscreants attacked him.
Sagardighi Trinamul MLA Subrata Saha said Rahman had no links with his party. Meanwhile, in another incident, an assistant agriculture officer Fazlul Haque was dragged out of his office in Nanoor in Birbhum and punched and kicked. Kedarnath Mondal and his associates stormed into Mr Haque’s office on Monday afternoon when he was distributing relief cheques to flood victims. Accusing Mr Haque of discrimination, Mondal wanted to see the list of the recipients. When he refused to show the list saying it was government document, Mr Haque was caught by the collar and then beaten up.
