Congress celebrated its 131st anniversary on Monday. But the question arises — “Is this the real Congress ” Let us go back in time to November 1969. Consequent upon the defeat of the official party nominee for the incumbent of Raisina Hill, Prime Minister Indira Gandhi was suspended from membership of the party. She quit the organisation with her followers to form what came to be known as Congress (I). The original Congress Party that remained was thus called Congress (O). Therefore, what we know today as the Congress is a party which should be aptly labelled Congress (Indira).
