The sudden demolition of shanties in the dead of the night by railway officials in Delhi’s Shakurbasti area, which resulted in the death of an infant shows that the powers that be are least concerned about the wretched of the earth. It’s sad that the Railway Board had no response for Delhi chief minister Arvind Kejriwal’s enquiry into why the demolitions were ordered even before a rehabilitation package was put in place. Mere suspension will not do. The culprits behind this hasty “clearing of fresh encroachment” must be brought to book.
