Islamabad: Qatar’s foreign minister Sheikh Mohammad bin Abdulrehman Al-Thani was in Pakistan on a day-long visit to discuss Saudi Arabia-Qatar tensions and regional security, officials said Tuesday.

The visiting minister held meetings with Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif to discuss issues revolving around the regional situation.

“The dignitary engaged in discourse regarding the Saudi-led military alliance whose leadership was handed over to Raheel Sharif (former Pakistan army chief),” said an official.

His visit comes weeks after Middle Eastern countries - Saudi Arabia, Egypt, Bahrain, Yemen, Libya and the United Arab Emirates cut diplomatic ties last month with Qatar - accusing it of ‘supporting terrorism.’

Saudi Arabia had demanded from Pakistan officials to take a clear position on Qatar.
