This very special chip for women will be ‘low-crunch, the full taste profile, not have so much of the flavour stick on the fingers.’
PepsiCo chief executive Indra Nooyi has unleashed a hurricane on the internet with the announcement of what everybody is now calling ‘Lady Chips’.
On 31st January in a Freakonomics podcast Nooyi said that Doritos owned by Frito-Lay, a subsidiary of PepsiCo, was developing a ‘low crunch’ variety of chips for women.
“As you watch a lot of the young guys eat the chips, they love their Doritos, and they lick their fingers with great glee, and when they reach the bottom of the bag, they pour the little broken pieces into their mouth because they don’t want to lose that taste of the flavour…Women would love to do the same, but they don’t. They don’t like to crunch too loudly in public,” she said.
This very special chip for women will be “low-crunch, the full taste profile, not have so much of the flavour stick on the fingers, and how can you put it in a purse? Because women love to carry a snack in their purse,” she added.
The need to be ‘lady-like’ has forever plagued womankind with an unreasonable amount of pressure on them to ‘act a certain way’ but to expect women to have chip differently from men is pushing it too far.
Twitterati and trolls have pounced at Nooyi and PepsiCo alike for their presumptuous and sexist remarks:
.@Doritos - I appreciate that my delicate constitution will be better served eating #ladychips over the manly options currently available. But how are you adjusting the bag to accommodate my delicate #ladyfingers? How can I eat them if I have to make noise OPENING the bag??!— Alix (@AngryAlix) February 5, 2018
