New York: Former US presidents Barack Obama and Bill Clinton on Wednesday expressed solidarity with the victims of the New York terror attack that claimed eight lives.

A 29-year-old Uzbek immigrant, allegedly inspired by the ISIS, ploughed a pickup truck down a crowded bike-only path in lower Manhattan, in the deadliest terrorist attack in New York City since the 9/11 incident.

At least eight people were killed and 11 others injured in the attack, while the suspect was arrested.

“Michelle and I are thinking of the victims of today’s attack in NYC and everyone who keeps us safe. New Yorkers are as tough as they come,” Obama, 56, said in a tweet, which was retweeted by former first lady Michelle Obama.

Bill Clinton, 71, also took to the social media site to express his condemnation for terrorism.

“New Yorkers see this attack for what it is- an attempt to sow fear. We stand against terror as we grieve for the victims and thank the @NYPD,” the 42nd president of the United States tweeted.

Former White House contender Hillary Clinton, 70, denounced the attack as a “cowardly act”.

“New York’s resilience is stronger than a cowardly act of terror. Thinking of the victims, their families, & the responders who saved lives,” she posted on Twitter.

Republican Senator and Chairman of Senate Armed Services Committee John McCain said, “Praying for all those impacted by the tragedy in #NewYorkCity. Thanks to first responders & law enforcement for their quick action.”
