The Android One handset finally gets Android 8.1 Oreo but there is a bug that wipes out the SMS history.
Xiaomi A1, the brands only Android One handset has finally started getting the Android 8.1 Oreo update. According to an official post, this software update that has been made available includes the June Android security patch.
A beta update had leaked for the A1 in April but apart from this, there was no official confirmation about any official release being rolled out now. With this update being released, it is a great move by Xiaomi as they are still supporting their one and only Android One handset.
A senior member on XDA, joeyhuab has stated that they have received the update and it comes loaded with the June security patches. The update weighs 1.1GB and it appears to be rolling out globally with users from India and the Philippines getting the OTA (over-the-air) update. Apart from the OTA update, users can also flash the Fastboot ROM.
To update your Xiaomi A1:
1. Open your device's Settings app
2. Near the bottom, tap About Phone and then System updates.
3. You'll see your update status. Follow any on-screen steps.
If you cannot wait for the OTA update, you can download the Fastboot ROM here.
There is a known bug where SMS Messages are wiped out after upgrading to 8.1. It is highly advisable to manually backup your SMS by Manually Triggering the Google backup thru ADB on PC or use any 3rd party SMS Backup App.
The changelog of the update includes a different power menu, a tint when the power menu is open, Settings/ SystemUI theme adapts to colour of the wallpaper, the sound is better, and an updated launcher.
