Xiaomi has been one of the few companies that works closely with Google for their Android One smartphones. At the I/O 2018, Xiaomi became one of the first few OEMs to offer Android P’s Developer Preview on their Mi MIX 2S flagship smartphone. Since Xiaomi shoves MIUI for most of its smartphones, the company has to make sure that every new Android update should look different from the previous one and therefore, should sport a new UI. Thanks to leaks, we now know how Xiaomi’s Android P-based MIUI 9 build would look, which could eventually hint MIUI 10's new design.

Chaps going by the name of FunkyHuawei.club on XDA Forums have shared a Nightly Build for MIUI 9 v8.5.11 meant to be installed on the Mi MIX 2 handset. The build is base don Android Oreo as of now, but it showcases all the new elements that MIUI will be getting in the coming months. The most highly noticeable change is the presence of a stock-Android like an interface found on the Developer Preview of Android P.

No, don’t think for a minute that MIUI has had a change of heart and will only be offering light skins on top of stock Android. The new MIUI build showcases a new notification shade with round toggles that turn blue when enabled. The icons in the status bar and the battery icon have also been tweaked in accordance with the new Android P design language. The volume slider now pops out from the side, like Android 8.1 Oreo. The multitasking window now displays all the recently opened apps in Android P-style tabs, albeit arranged vertically. Rest of the UI elements are now more rounded everywhere. The lock screen also gets a minor revamp with an updated clock and other minutely tweaked UI.

The build is presently only available for the Mi MIX 2 and if you have one lying around, you can get the taste of the latest MIUI build, provided you are familiar with flashing ROMs on devices using an unlocked bootloader. Once Android P gets a stable build, expect Xiaomi to roll out the new MIUI 10 based on Android P to supported Xiaomi smartphones later in the year.
