The MWC 2018 proved that the iPhone X’s notch is here to stay and will be copied blatantly by smartphone manufacturers from the Android universe. As with all ‘iPhone-adopted’ features, the notch will be initially seen only in premium smartphones, followed by it trickling down to budget phones. However, a Chinese manufacturer couldn’t afford to wait, which is why it came up with a budget smartphone with the notch — the Oukitel U18.

The U18 is a budget Android smartphone for the Chinese market that will bring Apple’s fabled notch to the mortals at a relatively affordable price of $159. Since the display gets more space on the front, the screen now stretches to an aspect ratio of 21:9 with the 5.85-inch panel. However, since the notch had to made affordable, the bottom of the display has a fat lip like the Galaxy S8, which makes the notch seem completely unnecessary.

However, don’t expect any other iPhone X-esque premium features on this kid. The U18 is built around a MediaTek 6750T octa-core chipset along with 4GB of RAM and and 64GB of storage. It runs on the old Android 7.0 Nougat, which mounts a custom interface on top of it. There’s a dual camera sensor for the rear, which doesn’t resemble that of the iPhone X. The notch houses a 13MP selfie camera, which can also do 2D facial recognition duties as well. The U18 is kept alive by a 4000mAh battery and can be charged via a USB Type-C port.
