The popular social networking site Facebook has made a new shift into the payments space by expanding its partnership with PayPal. Facebook and PayPal have announced a new partnership that allows users to now send money to each other via the Messenger app.

Facebook Messenger and PayPal initially partnered last year to enable customers to connect their accounts and use PayPal to shop on Messenger. The new announcement expands the focus of this feature and opens up into peer-to-peer payments for Facebook messenger users, who have linked their Paypal account to the app.

At present, the peer-to-peer payments system is only available in the US, where PayPal has over 2.5 million accounts that are linked to Facebook. PayPal has more than 218 million customer accounts worldwide. Furthermore, PayPal has also introduced a customer service bot for Messenger, allowing users to seamlessly receive payment and account support directly in the messaging app.

Facebook and PayPal’s joint venture for peer-to-peer payments come ahead of the release of Apple Pay Cash, Square Cash, Snapchat’s payments and Paypal’s own venom application.
